Bond committee gives school board $269 million package

Unlike some of their kids at school this week, 98 Katy Independent School District residents would have no problem scribing an essay on what they did this summer vacation Š they built a new school district bond.

On Wednesday night at the KISD School Board work study session, the bond committee presented its completed package, totaling $269, 472,255, a little over $8 million more than the package voted down by voters this past May.

The bond proposal is dominated by money for new schools ($119.9 million) and renovations to existing facilities ($98.4 million).

“We want to invest in our current students and facilities,” committee spokesman Dr. Tommy Harrison told the board Wednesday night.

“It seems like the money is there, we just need to get the voters to approve it. We all know that’s not easy task.” …more…

Katy’s one of three big districts with recognized label

Katy school district officials learned Tuesday from the Texas Education Agency that Katy has improved from an overall acceptable rating to a recognized rating and several district campuses have risen higher in individual school rankings.

Katy is one of 330 districts out of 1,227 districts statewide to receive a recognized academic rating in 2006, according to new accountability ratings for public schools announced today in a press release by Texas Education Commissioner Shirley Neeley.

For individual school school accountability ratings for Katy ISD schools, check the TEA Web site at http://www.tea.state.tx.us. Campus ratings are also posted at www.katyisd.org.

Also, in a Katy ISD press release today, school officials say they are pleased that Katy is one of only three large districts in Texas to receive the recognized status. ...more…
