Katy ISD to offer night school

Katy Independent School District students looking for an alternative to the traditional high school program will have a new option available to them starting Aug. 27.

The district’s first night school program will be implemented at Martha Raines High School, 1732 Katyland Drive.

The schedule will be Monday through Thursday from 4-9 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

“With the success that we’ve seen in the alternative school of choice program over the last five years, the addition of a night school was the next logical step in the program’s evolution,” explained Raines High School Principal Patty Bing.

“Providing an opportunity for students to work at their own pace in an alternative setting allows us to reach many students who might otherwise drop out and not complete their education.”

Using a combination of online and teacher-based instruction, Raines High School utilizes an accelerated, standards-based curriculum designed to meet individual needs. The curriculum allows students to complete graduation requirements at their own pace, and provides an opportunity for them to graduate within four years of starting high school.

A low teacher-to-student ratio, one computer per student and individualized instruction are utilized, Bing said.

Reclassified sophomores and juniors who have not passed all of exit-level Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills tests may apply through their home campus counselor for review by a district committee. The committee meets a few times each school year.

Juniors and seniors who have passed the exit-level TAKS test and are considered at risk of dropping out of high school will be accepted through application at their home campus.

Students interested in applying to the night school program can get an application from their school counselor or download an application from the Raines High School Web page at www.katyisd.org/

Students and parents seeking additional information can contact the school at 281-237-6350.

Originally known as the Katy ISD School of Choice, the school was recently renamed Martha Raines High School in honor of Martha Raines, a longtime, respected district math teacher.

Since beginning in 2002, Raines High School has grown from one classroom and one teacher to seven classrooms, eight teachers, two paraprofessionals and a full-time assistant. More than 250 students graduated from Raines in 2006-07.
